First, tell us a little bit about yourself. What are your interests outside of CrossFit?
I’m a single mom of one awesome little dude named Parker. Outside of CrossFit I love being outdoors. Hiking and SUP are my two favorite ways to relax. My boyfriend and I just booked a trip to climb Machu Picchu in May 2019 which we’re really excited about.
How and why did you get involved in CrossFit?
My cousin lives in Wake Forest and is an avid CrossFitter. We reconnected when I moved to the Raleigh area a few years ago and I loved how strong she looked and felt so I decided to give it a try using a personal trainer and Crossfit-like workouts. It was great seeing my progress but I loved what it enabled me to do in everyday life more. It gave me a physical independence that I hadn’t had in the past. It was empowering to no longer have to rely on someone bigger and stronger than me to help me get certain things done.
I travel quite a bit for my job so I finally worked up the courage to start trying CrossFit gyms around the country. The workouts were different from the gym I was going to and the sense of community among the members was SO fun! I realized I wanted to find more people with my interests and feel more of a connection to my gym. I’ve found that at CrossFit Surmount!
What was the first workout that you completed?
I can’t remember but it probably had a ton of burpees. I’m short so I’m good at those. 🙂
What are your current and future training goals?
2018 was my first year doing the Open and I learned a lot about myself and my fitness level. After it was over I set specific goals to hit by the 2019 Open.
Right now, I’m working toward sets of 25 double unders, chest to bar pull-ups, and hand stand pushups.
What is your favorite activity or lift, e.g., pull-ups, dead-lifts, running, front squats, snatches, burpees, etc.?
I love toes-to-bar. I’ve worked on those a lot this year and I’m really starting to knock them out (by my standards anyway).
What is your least favorite activity or lift?
Anything overhead scares me… A LOT. But I actually get excited when I see snatches or overhead squats in workouts because it gives me a chance to work on them.
What PR are you most proud of achieving and why?
My first pull-up was a big deal to me. I’ve always had strong legs but have never had a strong upper body and pull-ups just seemed way out of reach. When I finally got it (and yes it was a true strict pull-up) I was pretty excited!
What do you enjoy more, strength or conditioning and why?
I like both but probably conditioning a little more. I think the WOD is the most fun when everyone is pushing each other and yelling at each other to work harder and challenge themselves.
Lobster, artichokes, and steak.
What are 3 fun facts about you?
- I grew up in the Dominican Republic and I speak Spanish
- I played the violin for 20 years. I don’t play anymore
- I’m one of five kids
