First, tell us a little bit about yourself. What are your interests outside of CrossFit?

I am one of those rare Raleigh natives. Proud graduate of Athens Drive High School! My wife, Amy is a Teacher’s Assistant at Scotts Ridge Elementary and we have two boys, Jack (8), Sam (6) and expecting another boy this April. My day job is Executive Director of the Council of Governments for the Research Triangle region. Amy and I enjoy spending time on the lake and stay quite busy shuttling Jack and Sam between baseball games and other activities. We also bought a home in Apex a couple years ago that was in need of some TLC so we stay busy most weekends on some type of project.

How and why did you get involved in CrossFit?

I kept trying to improve my fitness and lose weight by jogging and would do well for a month or two and then get bored and stopped. So, I was looking for something a little different that would keep me motivated and interested. I thought about CrossFit as an alternative and CrossFit Surmount was close by so I decided that I would give it a try. I intended to try a couple other CrossFit boxes to see which I liked the most, but after visiting CrossFit Surmount I decided I really didn’t need to try anywhere else because I enjoyed it so much!

What was the first workout that you completed?

This wasn’t my very first workout, but it was my third and I went out of town the same day. The WOD included about 150 Wall Ball Shots. I woke up the next morning at the hotel and almost could not get out of bed because I was so sore!

What are your current and future training goals?

My biggest goals continue to be to improve my fitness, steadily improve my performance and lose some more weight. Specifically, I’d really like to string together more pull ups, get a HSPU and do a WOD Rx with double unders.

What is your favorite activity or lift, e.g., pull-ups, dead-lifts, running, front squats, snatches, burpees, etc.?

I’ve actually enjoyed full snatch work. It’s challenging and something I’ve never done before. I also enjoy power cleans.

What is your least favorite activity or lift?

It’s funny since I enjoy full snatches – I can’t stand the OHS, I have struggled with them since day one. Also not a big fan of box jumps (my new scars on my shins certainly agree J )

What PR are you most proud of achieving and why?

Not sure I am most proud of a single PR – but really happy that I have lost 40 lbs since starting Crossfit in January 2017.

What do you enjoy more, strength or conditioning and why?

I have really enjoyed the strength portion the most. I like seeing the progress I make and excited to see what PR I can achieve next.

What is your favorite food(s)?

I love grilling out, so anything that can be grilled is great for me!

What are 3 fun facts about yourself?

1 – I have had lunch with Michael Jordan

2- I have been in two high speed chases (don’t worry I wasn’t the one being chased!)

3 – My one shot at being a Hollywood star came pretty young in life (and never materialized into anything). I was in a TV commercial for Lochmere Subdivision when it was first being built.
