First, tell us a little bit about yourself. What are your interests outside of CrossFit?
I have two sons, Bryson (16) and Landon (11) and both keep me very busy. I’ve been married to the love my life (Blair) for almost 19 years. I’ve been a nurse for over 20 years and recently came back to nursing after being in medical sales for many years. We moved to NC 6 years ago from Northern CA. Although I miss CA, living in NC has been wonderful. I love trying new restaurants with Blair and the kids. Especially hole in the wall places and family run restaurants. I’m game for trying new things at least once. l tried goat yoga this year, did you know goats poop pellets? Yuck! I tried rock climbing, zip-lining, and I’m itching to try skydiving. Anyone want to join me?
How and why did you get involved in CrossFit?
I was anxious to try something different and thought CrossFit was going to be like any other exercise program. I fully expected I would stick with it for the trial period and then get bored. Well almost 3 years later, I’m still going at it! I love CrossFit because it includes gymnastic moves which reminds me of my days when I was a gymnast. I feel like I’m not just exercising but I’m building skills, not only physical functional skills but confidence skills that has affected my life outside of the box.
What was the first workout that you completed?
I don’t remember the workout name other than it had running, rope climbs and I think weighted squats and it was really HOT outside! I remember thinking, “I can’t believe I paid money to go through this, what was I thinking?!” Athletes were passing me by and encouraging me to keep going or yelling out “ You’re doing great”. I was the last one done and gasping for air and everyone gave me a high five. I knew then I found my fitness home. I did everything scaled but I felt I had accomplished more in that 20 minutes of hell than I ever did going to a regular gym! What do you remember most about the workout?
What are your current and future training goals?
I’m working towards a strict pull up, stringing double-unders and would like to compete in a local CrossFit competition next year. I knew I wouldn’t be ready or confident competing next year going at it alone. Reading and watching you tube videos wasn’t cutting it for me, so I started barbell club this year, which has been a game changer for me. Jay’s program and attention to technique has helped me get over the fear that If I add more weight I will hurt myself. I recently read an article taking 5-10 minutes before or after a class to work on skill is better than dedicating 45 minutes a week. So I’m incorporating this into getting my first strict pull up and double under goal. Also, Keeping up with yoga is important to me too, its keeps me flexible for squats, overhead moves and any gymnastic skill I want to gain, plus I would love to be able to do the side split crow pose one day!
What is your favorite activity or lift, e.g., pull-ups, dead-lifts, running, front squats, snatches, burpees, etc.?
I love back and front squats, cleans, and snatches. I love anything gymnastics, I secretly hope there are handstand walks in the open. J
What is your least favorite activity or lift?
RUNNING, kettle bell swings and after 18.2, DB cleans!
What PR are you most proud of achieving and why?
Kipping pull ups and my first rope climb. My weakest event when I was a gymnast was the uneven bars, so doing a kipping pull up at my age was epic for me. Once I get a strict pull up I’m going for the muscle up! I’ve been chasing the rope climb for a couple of years, I just couldn’t get my hand over the enormous thick black tape to tap the beam. Getting my footwork right and learning to use my legs helped me bypass the darn black tape!
What do you enjoy more, strength or conditioning and why?
I enjoy strength training, It makes little ole me feel like a badass!
Filipino, Sushi and Cajun food.
What are 3 fun facts about yourself?
I was a Navy Nurse Corp reservist, a gymnast, and I’m turning 50 this year!
