First, tell us a little bit about yourself. What are your interests outside of CrossFit?
I am an X-ray technologist with Duke. I’ve been an X-ray technician since 2005 and really love my career. I enjoy hanging out with friends on the weekends and am an active member at my church. I lead such an exciting life!
How and why did you get involved in CrossFit?
I was tired of working out solo and not being motivated enough to push myself past my limits. Going to the gym and lifting weights and doing cardio was starting to become boring. I wanted to do something different, but didn’t know what to try next. I had heard of CrossFit and knew I was not in shape to do any of the movements, but didn’t realize that CrossFit was scalable until my first Bootcamp class.
My good friend and sorority sister, Bonnie Locklear, is the one who introduced me to CFS. I saw the Living Social link on her Facebook page and said that I would try it. I knew I had until October to cash in my Living Social deal and I was constantly emailing back and forth with Paul because I was afraid my deal was going to expire before I got the chance to use it. My Mom was very sick and I was working during the week and spending the weekends at the hospital to relieve my sister so she could have some down time. After my Mom passed away in August, 2013, I was sad and depressed and almost ate myself into a coma. I started Bootcamp in October 2013, did Foundations in December and haven’t looked back!
What was the first workout that you completed? What do you remember most about the workout?
My first workout was a Bootcamp class. I knew I was overweight and out of shape, but didn’t realize just how bad it was. I remember the coach warming up doing high knees and I thought I was going to die! THAT was JUST the warmup! Then we had to run. I taught myself how to run by reading books and I’m a horrible runner, but I run. Well, more like jog! I remember being so exhausted after the class, but excited about coming back the next day.
What are your current and future training goals?
I am excited about taking Coach Paul’s running clinic and hopefully, if scheduling permits, I will finally be able to take the CF Endurance classes which will enable me to be a better runner. I am hoping to run my 3rd half marathon next year and be able to do it in under 2.5 hours.
What is your favorite activity or lift, e.g., pull-ups, dead-lifts, running, front squats, snatches, burpees, etc.?
My favorite lift is the dead-lift. I like to lift heavy stuff!
What is your least favorite activity or lift?
My coordination is horrible so I have great difficulty with the Power Jerk. And burpees. Well, we all LOVE burpees!
What PR are you most proud of achieving and why?
My recent PR of 34 unbroken wall balls. When I started CF, I could not break below parallel, and now I can. Thirty-four unbroken squats, all below parallel.
What do you enjoy more, strength or conditioning and why?
I would have to say the strength part of our workouts are my favorite because I am a more strong athlete than I am a conditioned athlete. I’m working on the conditioning part and hope to be equally strong in both areas.
Do you eat Paleo/Zone?
Paleo is the lifestyle for me. I have lost 25 lbs since starting our first Lurong Challenge. I love bacon! Did I mention how much I love bacon?
What are 3 fun facts about yourself?
- I love to laugh
- I have 3 younger sisters
- I am a Lumbee Indian from Robeson County, Pembroke NC
