Athlete of the Month: January 2021 – Stefan Djuric

by Head Coach | Jan 1, 2021 | athlete of the month

First, tell us a little bit about yourself. What are your interests outside of CrossFit

I was born in Cleveland Ohio and lived there for 12 years. I played a lot of soccer and basketball in my early years with some clubs in the Cleveland area. I love watching sports especially the Browns even though it can get very frustrating! I also like watching the Cavs, Ohio State Buckeyes, and the Columbus Crew play in the MLS. I really enjoy hiking, rock climbing, zip lining, and other outdoor activities.

How and why did you get involved in CrossFit?

After I stopped playing soccer and basketball I was looking for some other ways to stay active. I tried joining some speed school programs and running clubs but it just did not feel right for me. I was looking for ways to combine some strength training with cardio and that is how I get involved in CrossFit.

What was the first workout that you completed?

The first workout that I completed had burpees and box jumps in it. I got really sore after but it was fun and I really enjoyed it.

What are your current and future training goals?

Right now my main goal is to work on pull-ups. I have always struggled with them and I hope to work through more progressions in order to get better.

What is your favorite activity or lift, e.g., pull-ups, dead-lifts, running, front squats, snatches, burpees, etc.?

My favorite movements are front squats, box jumps, and handstand push-ups.

What is your least favorite activity or lift?

My least favorite activities are overhead squats and thrusters.

What PR are you most proud of achieving and why?

I am most proud of back squat PR. From the time I started CrossFit to now my back squat has increased by about 100 pounds. This shows me the strength improvement along with the form because when I first started I would always go to low and my knees would always move inward. Now my squat form is much better along with the weight increase which makes this PR the one I am most proud of.

What do you enjoy more, strength or conditioning and why?

I enjoy conditioning a little bit more. It helps me push myself more and it takes my mind off of things and usually after a long hard metcon I feel good afterward.

How have you handled your training during the quarantine?

My training during quarantine was actually not too bad. I was able to participate in some of the zoom classes through April and May. I had a barbell so I was able to do pretty much all of the movements.

Favorite food(s)?

Gyros, Hummus, falafel or any other Mediterranean/Middle Eastern foods.

What are 3 fun facts about yourself?

1) I went fishing in South Carolina and caught an alligator

2) I met Duke Mens Basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski

3) In 2018 I went zip lining through Canyons near Cabo in Mexico
