First, tell us a little bit about yourself. What are your interests outside of CrossFit?

When my kids aren’t keeping me busy (which is almost NEVER) I enjoy baking, gardening, and reading. I also enjoy teaching Sunday school at Chatham Community church.

How and why did you get involved in CrossFit?

I had been unhappy with my weight and lack of energy for a while, and when we moved to South Dakota in 2013 I decided it was time to make a radical change. I had tried globo gyms before and always ended up on a treadmill or elliptical machine because I was too intimidated to try anything else. I tried my first class at CrossFit Sioux Falls in December of that year and joined before I left that day. CrossFit was completely out of my comfort zone, but I was immediately hooked! What I love the most about it is that it’s always different and someone else has taken care of programming. I just need to show up and do my best, and that was/is very appealing to me.

What was the first workout that you completed? What do you remember most about the workout?

My only goal the first day, and every day I come to CrossFit, is to survive. Ha! I don’t remember the exact workout, but it involved burpees. I had no idea what a burpee was, and when the coach showed me I laughed and said, “Yeah, you’re going to have to show me that again.” I vividly remember it being difficult to walk the next day! My first workout at CrossFit Surmount involved deadlifts, rope climbs, and traversing the rig. ‘Twas a humbling experience!

What are your current and future training goals?

My current goal is to be an asset to my team at the upcoming CrossFit Surmount Intrabox Competition! My future goal is to continue making improvements, large and small. Sometimes that means setting new personal records, and sometimes that means just showing up! More specifically, I’d love to get to the top of the rope and get an unassisted pull-up this year.

What is your favorite activity or lift, e.g., pull-ups, dead-lifts, running, front squats, snatches, burpees, etc.?

Power cleans have always been my favorite, followed closely by rowing and wall balls.

What is your least favorite activity or lift?

It would be totally okay with me if I never had to do another front squat or thruster again!

What PR are you most proud of achieving and why?

FINALLY getting double unders!

What do you enjoy more, strength or conditioning and why?

I enjoy strength more, because I feel like it’s less of a race than conditioning. I’m not super competitive and am not the fastest athlete around, so working to reach a new one rep max is more fun for me than a bodyweight WOD. Unless we’re rowing. 🙂

Do you eat Paleo/Zone?

I have completed several paleo challenges since starting CrossFit and have seen tremendous weight loss and performance/energy gains while participating. My goal is to eat paleo 80 percent of the time, and in reality some days are better than others. I was skeptical before joining the first challenge, but I was in need of another radical change! It wasn’t until I changed the way I ate that I started to see real improvement in my mood, energy levels, and performance at the gym. That first challenge was truly transformative! I highly recommend giving it a try.

What are 3 fun facts about yourself?

1. I grew up in a small town in the Ozarks of Missouri, where I attended the same school from K-12. Go, Panthers! YAY, marching band!
2. We have lived in 5 states in the last 7 years: Missouri, North Dakota, California, South Dakota, and North Carolina.
3. I met my husband when he hired me to be his summer lab and field assistant. It’s not as scandalous as it sounds, but it’s a fun story to tell!
Honorable mention: I was homecoming queen my senior year of high school! Boom.
