First, tell us a little bit about yourself. What are your interests outside of CrossFit?
I live in Apex with my husband, Dave, and our four young children. Being a chiropractor and acupuncturist, I have always been interested in natural therapies and alternative healing. I participate on several nonprofit boards in Cary. I was recently named on the grants committee for the Women’s Giving Network under the Cary Community Foundation. My favorite nonprofit that I volunteer for is Life Experiences. I absolutely love being a chiropractor and a mother! I do, however, struggle to find the perfect balance of raising a family and running a business.
How and why did you get involved in CrossFit?
I started CrossFit because I wanted to get healthy. When I came returned to CrossFit in January 2015, I was overweight and exhausted. My nutrition was all over the place. It was very difficult and embarrassing to admit that I needed assistance. I have counseled many patients on nutrition for 15 years and I couldn’t lose a pound on my own. I was speaking at the Raleigh convention center on adrenal fatigue and nutrition while being 50 pounds overweight. That’s when I decided to go back to CrossFit Surmount.
What was the first workout that you completed? What do you remember most about the workout?
I do not remember the first workout I completed. I do remember gasping for air.
What are your current and future training goals?
Since January, I have lost a total of 45 pounds. My goal is to lose 3 more pounds. Once I reach that weight, my goal is to never weigh myself again! In the future, I would like to improve my endurance and running. I would also like to gain some more flexibility in my ankles, wrists and hamstrings. I hopefully will be able to do a rope climb soon!
What is your favorite activity or lift, e.g., pull-ups, dead-lifts, running, front squats, snatches, burpees, etc.?
I like mostly anything that gives me an excuse to put chalk on my hands. Toes to bar and pull-ups are among my favorite. I also love handstands and hanging upside down.
What is your least favorite activity or lift?
My least favorite lift is the deadlift. The most difficult for me is front squats.
What PR are you most proud of achieving and why?
My favorite PR is when I completed my first unassisted pull-up. I still watch the video. I am also very proud that I can finally run to the 4th dot and back (400 meters) without stopping or walking.
What do you enjoy more, strength or conditioning and why?
This is a hard question. I believe I am better with strength; however, I like cardio better. The reason I like cardio is because it’s very challenging to me. If I’m going to pay to be here and devote my time, I want to be pushed. That’s why I love CrossFit!
Do you eat Paleo/Zone?
I’m an all or nothing kind of girl. Since January, I have eaten elite paleo. I might have cheated a dozen times.
What are 3 fun facts about yourself?
The reason I became a chiropractor is because I hurt my back as a competitive gymnast. I’m originally from Pittsburgh and I love the Steelers and the Penguins. I love to travel. Dave and I have traveled to 15 different countries and have visited 40 US states. I love to cook for my family and spend time with my kids. I also enjoy rock music, playing poker, drinking shots with my girlfriends, and reading.
